About This Course
Community development is understood as a professional discipline, and is defined by the International Association for Community Development as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes participative democracy, sustainable development, rights, economic opportunity, equality and social justice, through the organization, education and empowerment of people within their communities, whether these be of locality, identity or interest, in urban and rural settings.
Community development aims to enable people to create positive social changes in their communities through education, resourcing, and relationship building.

MODULE 1
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. Describe what community development is, discuss the characteristics of a community distinguishing between community outreach and community-based programs and identify core qualities or personal attributes are essential to good community work.
2. List and explain the ten steps to Community Development along with the strategies used in the various areas of community development and explain the four key roles usually found within community development.
3. Explain what community asset mapping is, how to identify, map and access the assets leverage them and align services with community priorities and values.
4. Identify and discuss the benefits of collaboration, evaluate the different types of collaboration in relation to your current community development project and discuss the factors and roles that contribute to successful collaborations.
5. Identify the common aims and goals shared with possible collaborators along identifying the components of a framework that can be used to deliver a project.

• Describe a board of directors and other governance structures.
• Review decision-making styles and outline an approach for achieving consensus.
• Outline the responsible of the various members of the board.
