About This Course

A career as a mixologist can be incredibly rewarding. It offers the opportunity to learn about different spirits and cocktails, experiment with new recipes, and meet new people. However, it’s important to remember that being a mixologist is more than just making great drinks. You also need to have an understanding of food and wine pairings, hospitality, and customer service.

If you want to become a mixologist, start by learning about the different types of alcohol and how they’re made. Then, try out some cocktail recipes and experiment with different ingredients and combinations. Finally, practice your skills by serving customers at local bars or restaurants.

A typical bartending guidebook simply gives you a set of drink recipes, but we all know that each bartender has their own take on most drinks. We mix to our own preferences, or the preferences of our patrons. So, what you really need to know is how things mix well together, how to keep your customers safe, and how to keep them tipping! That’s the goal of this course–to give you what you really need to know, and prepare you for that all-star position!

Back to the Basics

Every drink worth its Margarita salt has a section up at the front devoted to bar gear and all the various liquids and solids you’ll be using it to mix together—good, solid, useful information. This one’s no different. But if you’re the type who prefers to review this sort of thing with a nice, cold drink in your hand, I heartily suggest you skip to the next section and then come back and fill in as necessary. Having gone through Mixology 101, You already have an understanding of the mixology world and what it entails...By now, you should be feeling like one.

Being A Mixologist

Mixologists are responsible for creating and crafting cocktails, alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic drinks, and other concoctions. They’re often tasked with inventing new recipes and perfecting existing ones to ensure that their establishment has a unique and desirable menu of options for patrons. Mixologists must have an extensive knowledge of different types of alcohol, how they interact with each other when combined, and how they can be altered or enhanced by various ingredients or flavorings. This requires a strong understanding of chemistry and the way different substances react with one another under different conditions.

Health, Safety and Security in the Bar

Aims and Learning Outcomes of the Lesson On completion of this lesson the learner will be expected to be able to; • Explain the rationale for food safety, HACCP and personal hygiene and its effects on food safety • Explain the importance of labelling foods • Act on safety statements and the essential safety and security issues in bars • Apply best practice procedures for reducing risks and handling potentially violent situations in the bar • Explain techniques for improving safety in pub cellar operations • Compare and contrast insurance premium covers for bars • Outline the challenges of waste in bars and broadly explain prevention techniques for reduction, reuse and recovery • Conduct a waste audit for identifying waste and managing waste streams • Identify energy saving innovations for their bar

Alcohol Awareness

Introduction to Beverage Alcohol The way our guests react to beverage alcohol all depends on: • how much alcohol they consume • how much has entered the bloodstream • how fast the alcohol has entered the bloodstream We have to know how alcohol affects the body to help protect our guests from overconsumption. It is important to know what affects the body’s absorption rate of alcohol and the behaviors associated with the overconsumption of alcohol.

Alcohol Awareness Policy

Our alcohol awareness policy is simple and straightforward. We deny entrance to visibly intoxicated customers, under age minors and guests unable to provide valid ID. Our door staff is well trained and strictly enforces our alcohol awareness policy. Bartenders are prohibited from serving visibly intoxicated customers, under age minors or customers unable to produce ID. Our alcohol awareness policy promotes responsible service and encourages responsible drinking.

Cocktails

If you're in a nightclub, that may be all that is available to you; but cocktails run the gamut in terms of their unique and wonderful mixtures and flavours.

Alcohol free drinks

• Why are low and no drinks trending? • Why do people drink low & no cocktails? • Why should you have low and no drinks in your bar? • Quick and easy tips for bars on low and no You can swap, change the ratio, add sodas, teas, infusions, kombucha – the options are endless.

Types of Establishments

Drinking establishments are everywhere — from your local neighborhood pub, to your favorite college dive bar, to the cool speakeasies you discovered in that city you loved visiting. Understanding the different kinds of bars out there is as important for the average guest in search of quality alcoholic beverages and a good time as it is for the bar owners themselves.

Employment

Bartending is one of those professions that very often leads to business ownership, especially as bar culture is so tied to generational differences.
